But wave, tides and currents can impact your dives and affect your safety if you do not know how to handle them.
The SSI Waves, Tides and Currents specialty will enhance your dive skills and understanding, so you can enjoy diving in different environments safely and with confidence. You will gain a better understanding of dynamic open water environments and learn about the environmental conditions that affect different dive sites. You will also practice diving from shore, in currents or in rivers to earn the specialty certification.
Key Components of the SSI Course:
- Understanding Water Movement: Learn what drives tides, waves, and currents, and how to analyse these factors before a dive.
- Dive Planning: Learn to plan dives around specific environmental conditions to ensure safety.
- Practical Skills: Includes techniques for, shore Diving: Navigating surf zones and surge.
- Drift Diving: Procedures for diving in currents, including using surface marker buoys (SMBs).
- Safety: Buoyancy and positioning control in moving water.
- Online training and 2+ open water dives.
Course Prerequisites:
- Minimum Age of 12
- SSI Open Water Diver certification (or equivalent).
- Medical Fitness: Completion of a medical statement
